Can I Use The Same Essay For More Than One Application?

Can I Use The Same Essay For More Than One Application? For students thinking about taking a gap year, I would encourage them to apply to colleges during their senior year. Teenagers change a lot from August to May, and while you might feel sure in the fall that you want to take time off, seeing all your friends making college plans might make you feel differently in the spring. One of the things that helps students feel in control of this process is having options. Telling Caltech why you want to attend MIT is a quick way to end up in the “no” pile. Take the time to write original responses to all the prompts. It’s a lot of work, but it will pay off in the end. English teachers have the best intentions when helping students with college essays, but they don’t always understand that a great English essay does not always make a great college essay. It is fine to break out of the 5 paragraph mold for a college essay, and it needs to tell about the applicant. The college essay often frightens students because they think it has to be about some extraordinary event and they may not have something momentous to write aboutâ€"that is OK. Actually, the best college essays I have read have been about mundane, everyday life. What made them great is that the students showed who they were through their writing. Tips for writing an effective college admissions essay are essentially the same for all students. Limit the number of people that you ask to review your essay. Someone else can read your work for technical accuracy but too much revision removes your personality and creativity. REMEMBER that everything you write, each essay or short answer will be read and evaluated. Your essays are your only true voice in the application process. While I was aware that I would be writing countless essays over the next couple months , the Common App college essay felt the most daunting. I felt intimidated, to say the least, especially since I knew that I had to knock it out of the park with my essays if I even dreamed of being admitted to the selective schools on my list. I was terrified of clichés and blending in with thousands of other applicants, and I struggled to look away from “successful” essays, wondering if I could do what they did. Being able to consciously choose to take a gap year feels a lot better than having to take one by default. Some schools will allow you to defer enrollment for a year, and if you reapply after taking a gap year, you’ll have new experiences and stories to share in your application. The college essay is an important component of the college application process. Most colleges require at least one essay from applicants, and several schools require two or three. We checked in with Jodi Then, High School Counselor at Boston Green Academy, to ask her advice on crafting the best college essay. Jodi has several years of experience guiding Massachusetts students through the college admissions process, and she offers some wise words below. So many students think that they “know” what colleges want from an applicant, and this can have a big influence over their essays. Everyone â€" my parents, peers, counselors, teachers â€" always emphasized the importance of the Common Application college essay. It felt so daunting, to summarize the last 18 years of my life into 650 words, all while showcasing my “unique” personality against thousands of other students. Before the whole process even began, I already felt pressured to craft this beautifully written ssay that screamed, “This is who I am! College essay writing fills most students with apprehension and dread. The college admission essay can bolster a student’s overall application package. Taking a semester or a year before diving into college life can help students go into their freshman year with confidence, maturity, and some real-world perspective. Students will abuse the thesaurus and write about strange topics in an effort to impress and stand out. Instead of writing what you think the admissions office wants to read, write about what you want them to know. Again, the essay is a great space to reveal something new about you, so stand out by being yourself and showing another side of you as a person or student. With upwards of 25 or more essays to write for a balanced college list of schools, it’s tempting for students to repurpose essays across applications if the prompts are similar. While students can use the same main essay on the Common App for multiple schools, we always recommend that students tailor their supplemental essays to the individual colleges. As students write their essays, it might help to keep in mind why colleges ask them for these writing samples in the first place. The style and tone of a college essay are very different from most essays and research papers you write in school. So, often students aren’t sure exactly what to aim for when writing their essays. A quick and easy remedy is to read example essays written by successful applicants.

This has naturally triggered many discussions, ranging from the merits of European single-payer healthcare to those of America’s gun laws, that have often animated our meals. These exact conversations drove me to learn more about what my parents, grandparents, and other relatives were debating with a polite and considerate passion. This ongoing discourse on current events not only initiated my interests in politics and history, but also prepared me greatly for my time as a state-champion debater for Regis’s Public Forum team. Fifteen years and I finally realized why, this was a girl’s body, and I am a boy. Finally, after an additional seventy-two hours, the time comes to try it. I crack the seal on the bottle, leaning over to smell what I assume will be a tangy, fruity, delicious pomegranate solution. The insufferable stench fills my nostrils and crushes my confidence. I'm momentarily taken aback, unable to understand how I went wrong when I followed the recipe perfectly. Most importantly, my family has taught me an integral life lesson. I was herded by result-oriented, fast-paced, technologically-reliant parameters towards psychology and neuroscience (the NIH, a mere 2.11 mile run from my school, is like a beacon on a hill). I was taught that one’s paramount accomplishment should be specialization. I sit, cradled by the two largest branches of the Newton Pippin Tree, watching the ether. My favorite person, the one who helped me become the man I am today, ripped away from me, leaving a giant hole in my heart and in my life. The most important factor in my transition was my mom’s support. She scheduled me an appointment with a gender therapist, let me donate my female clothes, and helped build a masculine wardrobe. With her help, I went on hormones five months after coming out and got surgery a year later. I finally found myself, and my mom fought for me, her love was endless. Even though I had friends, writing, and therapy, my strongest support was my mother. I was six when I first refused/rejected girl’s clothing, eight when I only wore boy’s clothing, and fifteen when I realized why. When gifted dresses I was told to “smile and say thank you” while Spiderman shirts took no prompting from me, I’d throw my arms around the giver and thank them. My whole life has been others invading my gender with their questions, tears signed by my body, and a war against my closet. However, thinking on my own wasn’t enough; I needed more perspectives. Prior to attending Mountain School, my paradigm was substantially limited; opinions, prejudices, and ideas shaped by the testosterone-rich environment of Landon School. The Green Mountains of Vermont stretch out indefinitely, and from my elevated vantage point, I feel as though we are peers, motionless in solidarity. But a few months ago, I would have considered this an utter waste of time.

Dont Lie In Your College Admission Essay

Don’t Lie In Your College Admission Essay Whether you write about it in your essay, or just list it as one of your activities, sharing the influence it has had on you, personally, will be much more impactful. Talking about how being in marching band taught you the value of hard work isn’t your story; that could be anyone’s story. Talking about how helping people feel good isn’t original; everyone experiences that. It’s just that admissions officers learn nothing new about you when you write something that anyone could claim. A lot of students feel anxious about this because they don’t feel like anything unique has happened to them. Also I believe that students should believe that the more people who read an essay the better as these essays should really captivate and engage readers and help them see why you belong on their campus. It really depends on the schools to which you are applying. These tend to be smaller liberal arts schools or small selective programs within a larger university. Many students try to sound smart rather than sounding like themselves. Others write about a subject that they don't care about, but that they think will impress admissions officers. There is a funny article in “The Daily Beast” by Kristina Dell that shares the anecdotes of college admissions counselors from this year’s record batch of applications. Many of the anecdotes revolve around silly or even comical things students do during the course of the college admissions process. The majority of these anecdotes are drawn from ridiculous mistakes college applicants make in their college essays. College admissions officers are very busy and only want to read essays that help them make admissions decisions. Some colleges have a team of people read each file. Others divide them up, and then only share files that require further discussion. There is not one way that all colleges work, so I always tell students to assume everyone in the admissions office could their essays so that they cannot write anything that anyone and everyone cannot read. I’m going to switch gears a bit in today’s posting and give my in-depth analysis of SAT-II problems a breather. Instead, I will be talking about college admissions essays, and sharing with you some ways to help maintain perspective during the writing process. At first blush, the college admissions essay seems a very particular piece of writingâ€"it is a hybrid form of personal narrative, argumentative prose, epic poem, and impassioned plea. Sharing that you participated in an Outward Bound program will help colleges understand how you’re spending your time outside the classroom. But you also have the opportunity to articulate to colleges why this experience is worth mentioning. If that does not offer, then the application is passed on to another reader. As a rule, a college application essay is about 500 words, and these words could make you a freshman or ruin your plans for the future careless student life. You might work hard writing your essay for a few days and polishing your paper several times, but admission officers have only a couple of minutes to evaluate your values. Use our tips to write an impressive application paper to catch the admission board’s attention. Other schools may only read an essay if there is some question/s about the other parts of the application or there is a scholarship component and the answer to the essay has influence over that decision. It is always best however, to ask each school this very question and to understand exactly what they are looking for from the applicant in their answer. I would encourage students to think about how participating in Outward Bound impacted them, specifically. Anyone who completes an Outward Bound expeditioncould say that they were challenged, that they weren’t sure they could do it, but on looking back, they feel proud of what they’ve accomplished. The real questions to ask are, why was it challenging for you, personally? What about this makes you feel proud, and how will you carry this into the next part of your life? Each of member of our professional writing team is a U.S.-based native English speaking professional. Admissions officers have to read an unbelievable number of college essays, most of which are forgettable. But everyone has a different perception of their experiences, and the more you can share that, the more you’ll stand out in that stack of applications. Nothing has more impact than just being yourself. I worked with a student last year who had played in the marching band all of high school, which is something thousands of students can claim. I always tell students that they should be writing and essay that is to be published in the New York Times. If you would not want to see the work you are submitting published there in such a public way, then it is probably not in an acceptable form to submit for your application. It also depends on the school as to how many people will read an application essay. I know of a school where the complete application is read and the passed to another counselor who must agree with the decision of the first counselor.

What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example

What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example If you’re ever going to name drop, this is the place to do it. Mention specific names of people, buildings, societies, clubs, and more. As always, be as specific as possible, and pay attention to the writing itself, not just the content. This is a story about you and your connection to the school â€" not just a list of reasons. One student is really into ceramics and stock market simulations; one wants to study Archaeology and to continue teaching kids tennis in her self-started after-school tennis program. But by failing to maximize on the opener, by failing to take a stance, they are mushing themselves together with identical openers. If you are funny, write a funny essay; if you are serious, write a serious essay. Be specific and highlight traits that speak to your talents and interests. Don’t be vague and make sure you answer the prompt. When you try to impress an admissions officer, it can often appear that way and seem inconsistent with who you are. Use this space to show the school something special, be proud of who you are and let it shine through your written response. Not only that, but they’ve burned about 6% of their word count in doing so. Listening to yourself reading your essay aloud will help you understand what is clear and what is confusing. Don’t start with the end in mind, write to find out what you actually have to say. If you are asking yourself, how can I impress the college admissions folks without sounding, you know, braggy? The essay is one way to ascertain whether you can write well and support ideas with logical arguments. Another great thing about this book are the examples. There are student personal statement examples and vivid examples from famous writers. That's easy â€" it's the best way to study for AP classes and AP exams! StudyNotes offers fast, free study tools for AP students. College Gazette is the #1 source on higher education in the US. Every week, we post articles and related media all about the top universities in the world, as well as premium admissions tips and the latest college news. All rankings are simply the opinion of College Gazette and are not to be construed as definitive fact. The essay should reflect a student’s focus and #1 passion. A student who has showcased extreme passion and dedication towards one particular field tends to be more interesting to schools. Not only does the essay help decide whether or not you get accepted into a college, it also plays a major role in scholarships as well. These are the questions asked by tens of thousands students, English professors, parents, guidance counselors every single year. This is the point in your life where you pour the largest amount of bullshit you can muster into a paper. An essay where highschoolers have to boast about how awesome they are in order to get into the colleges they want. The harder they boast the more likely they'll get accepted. Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. Let’s start with mistakes to avoid when writing your essay. These are the beginnings of two very different, very accomplished writers. Ask others - those who know you well and those who do not - to read your work. Know the essay word limit and stick to it - ours is 650. Identify a topic or talk about something that is unique and different Or, breathe life into a mundane subject by approaching it differently. Be careful about bragging and using your essay to explain perceived injustice.

The Best College Essay Length

The Best College Essay Length I have a writing assignment in school, and it is always helpful to know how many pages I will need. I think that since teachers don’t give page assignments but only word count assignments, it’s difficult to imagine how many pages that will be. A&M states that the average length of most essays is a page and a half (think words.) A&M’s admission website states, “Additional essay will not be reviewed. The only information some applicants may lack is access to updated supplemental questions. Some schools, like Wake Forest, have updated their supplement information on their admissions website, but many other universities won’t release these additional questions until August. It depends on how large or small your letters are. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. it’s time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since it’s so dependent on your handwriting. Ultimately, your essay will be evaluated on the information you present, not on the number of paragraphs in the essay. Early in your academic life, teachers and lecturers may give you both a structure for your essay and a guideline on how long each part of the essay should be. After all, if the teacher is allocating 80 marks for content in total and you can see 50% of the mark relates to a certain part of the essay, then 50% of your essay’s words should be devoted to that section. Assuming five psychological effects have been identified, you can assume you’ll need to write five paragraphs if you are going to write a relatively in-depth essay. For example, if you are writing an essay on childhood development and exposure to technology, you will want to look into the physical, psychological and cognitive developmental effects of tech on kids. If you are really for some reason writing a 100 word essay, then you should have one short sentence for both your introduction and conclusion. Paragraphs structure information into sub-topics, and they make your work easier to read and understand thanks to the structure they provide. With careful advance planning, you’ll be able to work out more or less how many paragraphs you need to complete your essay. When you research this topic, you will find that there are contrasting points of view and researchers have identified several physical, developmental, and psychological effects of technology use in children. In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, it’s fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section. There is no firm rule that says an essay needs to have a set number of paragraphs, but an essay must be a minimum of three paragraphs. There are a lot of people who say an essay should be five paragraphs, but it’s an extremely limiting rule, and unless you’ve been instructed to write a five paragraph essay, there’s no reason to stick to it. I average 240 handwritten words per college ruled sheet. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. it’s like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. But the majority of your essay should involve your analysis based on credible research. Don't simply restate what happened in the book. The assigned prompts or topics may not harbor any interest for the student, making it difficult to put passion and meaning into the words when writing. A college student’s written work will either impress or dissuade the instructor, which has an effect on future placements. It’s harder to fool a college professor with shoddy writing. What you’re taught is often a general rule to shoot for, not a rule set in concrete. Your teacher felt that 7 paragraphs was a good number for the essays you wrote for her, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. My teachers always taught by eight paragraph essays, but five-paragraph essays normally lie precedent to the more advanced or larger essays. the general rule is that 3 paragraphs are minimum for an essay. So, no matter how short your essay is, you should still need 3 paragraphs. On average for a five-paragraph essay, I write around 1, words. For an eight paragraph essay, I write around 2,000-2,600 words on the document. Keep in mind your quotes too, you should have one quote per paragraph or two . It really is up to the person though, I have a buddy who writes considerably less than I do, but is able to get his point across.

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts

Application Essay Writing Tips And Prompts Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it will help you outline your essay. You may also choose to write about the struggles you’ve faced without getting into all the details. Saying, for example, that you experienced verbal abuse from your father, for example, may be enough; you don’t necessarily need to share the specifics. In the streets, in school, and in Baba’s taxi cab, my family and I were equated with the same Taliban who had pillaged our neighborhood and preyed on our loved ones. Okay, this isn’t necessarily a perfect way to outline an essay. You may not want to spend an entire paragraph describing your feelings, for example, or you may choose to describe your needs in just one sentence. However, the sideways Feelings and Needs chart can help you think about how the chronology of your experiences might translate into a personal statement. War has taught me to recognize the power of representation, to find courage in vulnerability, and best of all, to celebrate humor. Within a few weeks, my panel and interview were accessible worldwide, watched by my peers in school, and family thousands of miles away in Pakistan. For the purposes of this section, your future goal or career is the theme that connects all the parts of your story. The Type D essay section delves more deeply into other ways of weaving thematic threads. Well-known examples from movies include the “training” montages from Mulan, Rocky, or Footloose, or the “falling in love” montage from most romantic comedies. In just a few minutes, we learn the entire history of Carl and Ellie’s relationship. One purpose is to communicate a lot of information fast. Although the idea of being so vulnerable initially made me nervous, I soon realized that this vulnerability was essential to my growth. Like the faint scent of mustard oil in my hair, the war followed me to the United States. Here, I was the villain, responsible for causing pain. For the Type A essay, give us a sense of your vision, even if you don’t name your precise career. In The Birth of Sher Khan essay above, for example, you can track both. I never fully escaped war; it’s evident in the chills that run down my spine whenever an untimely call reaches us from family members in Pakistan and in the funerals still playing on Geo News. But I’m working towards a war-free life, internally and externally, for me and the individuals who can share in my experiences, for my family, and for the forgotten Pashtun tribes from which I hail. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. Another is to allow you to share a lot of different kinds of information, as the example essay below shows. For this essay type, I recommend the Montage Structure. A montage is, simply put, a series of moments or story events connected by a common thematic thread. Complete the brainstorming exercises, as these will help no matter which structure you choose. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because it’s true, but because it’s the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we don’t want to deal with. If you’re interested in writing about challenges, I highly recommend using the Narrative Structure. I have learned to accept my “ambiguity” as “diversity,” as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor.

College & Scholarship Essay Writing

College & Scholarship Essay Writing I want to scale real mountains, close my eyes and sit cross-legged on their tops while the whole world around me spins wildly into the future. At some point in everyone’s life, a promise stops being forever. But no matter how many times a promise is broken, I’ve always wanted to believe that someone will keep one to me. Thanks to that first morning on Fall Creek, I’ve found a calling that consumes my free time, compels me to teach fly fishing to others, and drives what I want to study in college. The best way of doing it is to start the essay from the middle of the story. It could be an anecdote, life event, incident, or just a life experience. Start your essay keeping in mind the main focus and shape your essay around it. Maybe your student is fascinated with a topic, talks endlessly about it, and has a solution to a problem that he/she wants to achieve while in college like a public transportation problem. For example, a student’s story could even focus on athletics, which isn’t usually a recommended essay topic unless an athlete went through transformation. Is there a time when a student has struggled, only to reboot, conquer, and win the situation? Not what your college consultant has to say, not what your mom wants you to write, and not what you think we want to hear. Be genuine to your own voice and to your own experiences. I am developing self-awareness, but I still have so much to learn. I want to travel to actual countries and take pictures on a bunch of disposable cameras because there is something magic about those blurry images that develop in the dark. Choosing essay prompts by keeping in mind your personal life experiences is a good thing. Considering your past life events, evaluating them, and stating what you learned from the experiences, is all there in the essay prompt. Is it explicitly stating what the application demanded? Essays with topics related to essay prompt work best. A student doesn’t have to hit all of these traits in an essay. A simple family tradition â€" making tortillas from a centuries old recipes â€" could be just the hook a college is waiting to read. If a student comes from an ethnic background, they could write about their heritage and how that has transformed them into the person they are today. This student may have an entrepreneurial spirit, starting a business, new organization, or event at school like a slam poetry night or an IT group. There’s only one you out there and that’s who we want to learn more about. Start your essay in the most interesting way possible. Initial details will bore your audience and they will definitely lose interest in reading your entire essay. Road2College is dedicated to providing families with trustworthy information about college admissions and paying for college. We recognize the two processes are intertwined and our goal is to educate families on all aspects of admissions and funding so they can make smarter college financial decisions. That truthfulness will likely woo college admissions staff and faculty. The essay is the source through which you tell everything about yourself. However, the writing should not be very personal, like including information about family members. Our experts talk to you about your life experiences and events to add them in your essay. The 24 hours of availability of experts help you keep in touch with them easily. To make your application get accepted, they put all their heart and soul to keep the essay specific and focused on your personality. The admission officer and the committee want to meet you before actually seeing you.
